Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
